Gambling, chance games, and lottery winnings are now subject to a new tax in Ghana. For domestic contestants, a 10% tax on all winnings will be imposed. In addition, a 20% tax on profits will be levied against betting companies doing business in the nation.
Different Ghanaians have reacted differently to the implementation of this new tax. While some have applauded the decision as a way for the government to raise money, others have criticized it as placing yet another burden on a people that is already heavily taxed financially.
In recent years, Ghana’s betting sector has expanded substantially as more people resort to it for easy money. Concerns have been expressed regarding the industry’s potential for negative social effects like addiction and problem gambling.
