Until a decision is made, the future of PSG superstar and former Barcelona captain Lionel Messi is expected to be the main topic of discussion in the media for the ensuing weeks and months.
The captain of Argentina’s national team is yet to negotiate a contract extension with PSG before the completion of the current campaign. That has given rise to rumours that the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner does not want to continue in Paris and has his heart set on a return to Barcelona given that he is taking his time negotiating a new contract.
For their part, the Catalans are currently attempting to re-sign their former captain and consider his return to be a “serious option” for the summer.
PSG isn’t ready to give up just yet, though. The Ligue 1 winners are prepared to do all within their power to keep Messi at Parc des Princes through this season, according to Mundo Deportivo.
PSG has already made a contract offer to Messi, and negotiations for the transaction began right after the World Cup. An agreement appeared to be close at the time, but since then, much has happened, and the Argentine has yet to sign the contract.
According to the source, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is not totally sold on the PSG idea, especially in light of the fact that the team has twice lost in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League despite having a world-class roster.
For their side, PSG is still committed to keeping Messi at the organization. To that purpose, they reportedly told his father and agent, Jorge Messi, that they are prepared to pay him more and extend his contract by more years in order to persuade him to stay in France.
PSG’s owner, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, wants to keep Messi with the team past this season and has given the staff strict instructions to do so.
